Before starting the discussion on the cheapest rear wheel drive cars it is important to note that there are three different types of drivetrains for cars all over the world. They are front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel/four-wheel drive.
Most luxury sedans and premium SUVs possess the option of all-wheel/four-wheel drive.
But, when we are talking about market capture offerings, the cars employ either front or rear-wheel-drive configuration.
Now meanwhile, the entry-level compact sedans and hatchbacks employ quite an easier front-wheel-drive configuration, and many of the utility vehicles of different categories like MPVs and SUVs possess rear-wheel drive as standard variants.
Do you know the important reasons why an RWD system is considered in UVs? They are for better control over understeer and torque steer. This also includes weight distribution and better towing capacity.
Here below is the list of the most affordable 5 RWD cars in India, all of which are UVs. Find out more about them.
Maruti Suzuki Eeco
This is one of the oldest cars or even an MPV on this list. Maruti Suzuki Eeco has been among the top-selling vehicles from the Maruti Suzuki stable.
Surprisingly, the Maruti Eeco is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. Also along with this, the Eeco comes powered by a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine. This vehicle is capable of generating 73ps of max power and 98Nm of max torque. Apart from power, this is just a rear-wheel-drive for 5-speed manual transmission.
Mahindra Quanto
Now, to hide a transversely mounted engine under the hood here comes the Mahindra Quanto or the Nuvo sport. It is when Mahindra experimented with a subcompact 6/7 seater. The important note is that first, it was the Mahindra Quanto, which was actually a chopped Xylo.
However, later on, the company gave it a bit of refreshed appeal and called it the Nuvosport. Now, to begin with, both the cars, Quanto and Nuvosport, share the same powertrain and drivetrain under the hood. This means it is a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder diesel engine that generates a healthy 100ps of max power. Also, the torque output is set at 240 Nm which is a powerful RWD.
Mahindra TUV300
The Indian vehicle manufacturer Mahindra every time tries new alterations. The latest alteration with an RWD is the TUV300. Similar to the Quanto or Nuvosport, the TUV300 also has an engine transversely mounted. This gives an allowance to the vehicle to be powered by an RWD drivetrain.
Not only just the drivetrain but the powertrain has also been shared with Quanto. This actually means that the power was set down on the road to the RWD via a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbo diesel motor. This motor has a capacity of generating 100hp of max power and 240 Nm of peak torque.
In the next stage, Mahindra later manufactured a TUV300 Plus. This car was a full-grown 6/7 seater SUV. However, both the cars from the brand never made it to the hall of fame.
Toyota Innova Crysta
The MPV segment in India is very popular. For example, the Toyota Innova is one of the best-sellers in this segment. The on road price of new Toyota Innova Crysta BS6 in India is around 20 to 30 lakhs. Thus, there is nothing better than the Innova. It has an engine with both petrol and diesel options plus with both manual and automatic transmission.
Tata Safari Storm
In the past, there was a time when Tata Safari was the vehicle that only supported a ladder-on frame chassis and was an RWD SUV. It is quite hard to break it down, that the current generation or the new variant of the Tata Safari is not only a monocoque but also runs on a front-wheel-drive drivetrain.
Compared with Scorpio, the previous-gen Safari also offered a 4X4 drivetrain. Which means a four-wheel drive.
Therefore it made it possible for an SUV like Safari to go anywhere, which includes deep into the wild. The previous generation or variants of the Tata Safari or the Safari Storme were powered by a 2.2-liter Varicor engine. This engine had a capacity of producing 150ps of max power and a whopping 320 Nm of peak torque which made it yet again more powerful. This engine gave an assurance that the SUV never felt underpowered.
